Widely highlighted during the presentation of Pixel 8 And 8 ProGoogle’s AI photo editing functions will land for free on almost all mobiles using Google Photos.

Move an element of a photo, deblur faces, erase elements in the background… Artificial intelligence is now capable of retouching our photos with extraordinary efficiency and realism. Google understands this and has been offering powerful editing tools within its Google Photos application for many months. Problem is, these features are only accessible to Google One subscribers or Pixel 8 owners. But not for much longer.

Free functions from May 15

In a blog post published on April 10, the search giant announced that a large part of its editing tools would be available for free within Google Photos from May 15. The “magic retouch” function which allows you to move objects in the photo, the “portrait lighting” which allows you to correct backlighting or the “eraser” which allows you to erase elements will soon no longer be blocked behind a paywall.

To take advantage of it, nothing too complicated, you just need a phone running iOS 15 / Android 8.0 minimum and equipped with 3 GB of RAM. If your mobile meets its constraints, it will be able to use Google’s editing tools from mid-May. If the technological bar is low, it is also because most of the computing power necessary for editing is assumed by Google’s servers. Moreover, only photos saved on Google Photos can be retouched at will.

Small technical limitations

The only small technical limit is that the magic retouching function will be limited to 10 uses per month if you do not pay for your Google One subscription or do not have a Pixel smartphone. To use it, your device will also need to have 4 GB of RAM, where the rest of the tools only require 3.

However, certain more advanced features such as the “Best Take” function or the retouching of ambient noise on videos will remain Pixel exclusives. Except for these small details, however, you will very soon be able to benefit from Google tools unlimitedly if your device is eligible.

Google Pixel 8 Pro

  • The screen: a panel with undeniable control
  • The photos, impeccable in all cases
  • Responsiveness, excellent even when multitasking

The Pixel 8 Pro is the best smartphone Google has ever made. By combining the Tensor G3 processor, and its advanced artificial intelligence features, with 12 GB of RAM, the American firm delivers a device designed for productivity and multitasking, on a generous 6.7-inch screen, with definition and with impeccable fluidity. Only mobile games will fault this smartphone, the most demanding titles struggling to exceed 30 frames per second.

The only real criticism we can make of this Pixel 8 Pro is that we struggle to find any real added value compared to the “classic” Pixel 8. The telephoto lens? The Pixel 8 does well without it thanks to very efficient software processing. The presence of a thermometer? The function is far too gimmicky to justify the price difference. Brighter screen? With the naked eye, you can barely see the difference between the two tiles.

If you absolutely want a larger diagonal, the Pixel 8 Pro is the obvious choice. If a smaller display is more than fine for you, the Pixel 8 will give you an equally satisfying experience, at a lower price than its big brother.
