Generally speaking, passwords are an inexhaustible source of trouble. It’s frustrating to have to create and remember strong passwords only to have them compromised.
According to Google, more than 60% of data breaches in 2021 involved stolen login credentials or phishing.
But on Monday, Google Workspace announced a security update to address this issue. Users from over 9 million organizations will be able to sign in to Google Workspace and Google Cloud using passkeys instead of passwords.
Alternatives to passwords
Passkeys are alternatives to passwords that allow users to log in more securely using methods such as facial recognition, fingerprints, or other screen lock mechanisms.
In May, Google introduced passkeys for users’ personal accounts. Early data from Google shows that passkeys are twice as fast and four times less error-prone than passwords.
Administrators will be able to enable passkeys as a login option for their organization. By default, this setting will be disabled, but users will still be able to use passkeys as a two-step verification method.
According to Google, user passcodes and controls for Workspace will be rolled out gradually over the next few weeks.
