Gordon Herbert will stop as national basketball coach after the Olympics: world champion in 2023 and European Championship bronze in 2022

National coach goes to the Olympics
World champion maker Herbert retires early

The national basketball team is losing the architect of its World Cup triumph: Gordon Herbert will leave the German Basketball Association after the Olympic Games. The DBB confirmed this. Herbert, who sensationally led the team around captain Dennis Schröder to the World Cup title in 2023, is leaving his contract early. This actually ran until after the European Championships next year, but according to the DBB it will now be dissolved on August 31st.

“The great successes of the DBB men and the associated huge public recognition are forever linked to the person of Gordon Herbert,” said DBB President Ingo Weiss: “We would like to thank him very much for that. We have great understanding for that “Gordie wants to devote himself to another task after the Olympic Games and we are not putting any obstacles in his way.”

Herbert was appointed Henrik Rödl’s successor in September 2021. In 2022, the DBB team also won the bronze medal at the home European Championships under his leadership. Now his contract will be terminated at the end of August this year. His announced three-year plan ends with the Olympics in France. “The trip was the ultimate life moment for me,” said Herbert, thanking the players and the association for “an incredible experience and an honor.” It is not yet known who will be the Canadian’s successor.

“Anyone who knows Gordie knows that he will throw himself into preparing for the Olympic Games with full commitment and passion. It would be great if our time together could end with another exclamation mark,” said Weiss.

“The medals were great, but what made the whole thing so special were the people involved, the people,” said Herbert: “Now I’m looking forward to the last part, the last challenge of our three-year plan, the Olympic Games 2024.” He has not yet said where Herbert’s path will lead.
