The inventors of Gorilla Glass, Corning, have presented a new variant of tempered glass that replaces the previous top-of-the-range Victus. With Gorilla Glass Victus 2, future displays of smartphones and tablets should even be protected against falls on concrete.
For the development of Victus 1, asphalt was still the hardest “enemy” material that a smartphone could hit. Concrete is significantly harder and rougher, Corning points out. And the weight and size of the falling smartphone also plays a crucial role.
From a height of 2 meters on asphalt without damage
These have increased in recent years and with it the force with which a mobile phone can open. The result should be something to be proud of: A Gorilla Glass Victus 2 display easily survives a fall from a height of one meter – average waist height – onto concrete and two meters onto asphalt – at least in the manufacturer’s laboratory tests.
Everyday falls often happen on softer floors, which most types of tempered glass protect against. Victus 2 is available to manufacturers now and will soon appear on the first smartphones. Which model will mark the launch remains to be seen. Examples include the Samsung Galaxy S23 and the Xiaomi 13.
