Gotthard route: traffic jam at the start of the holiday

gam./fra. Just in time for the start of the summer holidays in many cantons, there was also a traffic jam on the Gotthard route to the south. Anyone who travels to Ticino or Italy must therefore be patient – even on Sundays.

On Sunday morning, the traffic jam on the north side of the Gotthard tunnel was already several kilometers long. In the early afternoon, cars are backed up for around 6 kilometers between Amsteg and Göschenen. A waiting time of up to 55 minutes must be expected, as the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) announced on Twitter.

The route to the south was already overloaded on Saturday. According to the TCS, the cars between Erstfeld and Göschenen accumulated up to eleven kilometers. The time lost was up to two hours. Towards evening the situation relaxed again.

Viasuisse announced before the start of the holiday that traffic jams on the north-south axis in front of both Gotthard portals were “practically certain” until the end of August.
