PARIS (Reuters) – Health Minister Francois Braun called on the French on Friday for a boost in flu and COVID-19 vaccinations as the country faces three concurrent waves of outbreaks with bronchiolitis among children.

“I solemnly call for a burst of vaccination, not to please the Minister of Health and Prevention, but to protect, protect,” said the minister during a press conference.

“The French are less well protected this year in the face of the risks of epidemics that are circulating. A major part of our most fragile compatriots are therefore directly exposed to viruses”, he further declared.

François Braun also invited the French to wear a mask in public transport, without however making it compulsory again.

At the end of November, when a resumption of the COVID-19 epidemic was noted, the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, had also called for the wearing of a mask in transport and in contact with fragile people, as well as respect for gestures barriers.

Thursday, France recorded 71,597 new cases of contamination, an increase of 3.4% over one week, indicates on its Public Health France website. Some 159,517 people have died of COVID-19 in France since the start of the pandemic.
