  • In the deadlocked coalition talks in the Netherlands, right-wing populist Geert Wilders is ready to give up the prime ministership. He announced this on X.
  • His Party for Freedom (PVV) and three other conservative parties were considering a scenario in which party leaders would remain MPs, Dutch media reported.

Wilders wrote on X: “I can only become prime minister if all parties in the coalition support it. That was not the case.”

The right-wing populist has held talks with potential allies since the election on November 22nd – i.e. for more than 100 days – but these have not led to any result. A mediator appointed to support the process is due to report its findings to Parliament on Thursday.

Legend:

In the election on November 22nd, the radical right-wing populist Geert Wilders and his anti-Islam party PVV became the strongest force and won 37 of the 150 seats in parliament.

Wilders has been unable to form a coalition since the November election. During the election campaign, he announced that he would stop all immigration, cut Dutch EU payments and prevent new members such as Ukraine from joining. He also rejects Islam and does not want to continue supplying arms to Ukraine.
