  • The affair about tax arrears and a fine of millions became Minister Nadhim Zahawi’s undoing.
  • Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sacks the Tory leader after an independent inquiry found misleading statements by Zahawi.
  • The move is another setback for the Conservatives ahead of the 2024 general election.

Nadhim Zahawi, a former finance minister and most recently a minister without portfolio as secretary-general of Sunak’s Tories, has seriously violated the ministerial code, Prime Minister Sunak said on Sunday.

An investigation independent of Sunak had found that Zahawi had made publicly misleading statements about a conflict with the tax authorities, according to Commissioner Laurie Magnus.

Legend:

Tory boss Nadhim Zahawi: He wanted to dismiss the tax affair as a “minor negligence”. When the tax fine of one and a half million Swiss francs became public last week, the waves went up.

When selling a company, Zahawi is said to have not properly taxed the profit of the equivalent of CHF 30 million. After that, the then Minister of Finance allegedly made additional payments of seven million francs in a deal with the tax authorities. Recently it became known that he also had to pay a tax fine of one and a half million francs.

“It’s fair to say that Sunak inherited almost impossible tasks when he took office: an ailing health system, a country shaken by a historic economic crisis and chronic strikes,” says SRF correspondent Patrik Wülser when asked whether the various scandals could become a problem for Sunak.

“But Sunak did not stand out as a charismatic politician with ideas, but rather as a technocratic estate administrator. Moreover, the scandals mentioned are not simply glitches or mistakes, but somehow show a serial, slightly narrow-minded pattern of behavior – namely a conservative elite who give the impression that they are above the law.”
