GPD furious with AMD for not distributing as many Ryzen 7 7840Us as planned

THE portable consoles are on the rise, but some manufacturers are behind schedule with shipments. AMD is directly singled out.

Since the release of Valve’s Steam Deck, the number of portable consoles from China has increased significantly. A new market has been created, and manufacturers intend to take advantage of it.

They still need to have all the essential components for these small machines, which rely in particular on the power of AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U, and its Zen 4 and RDNA 3 duo.

Ryzen 7 7840Us slow to be delivered

Whether it is the Steam Deck signed by Valve or the ROG Ally from ASUS, the two most prominent machines on this new market certainly have AMD chips, but these are chips specifically developed for these machines.

AMD has established a partnership with Valve and ASUS, but probably could not communicate with all the players in the portable console. For others, and in particular Chinese companies like AOKZOE, AYANEO, GPD or OneXPlayer, they have no other choice but to turn to AMD’s “stock” chips. The Ryzen 7 7840U is one of them.

In terms of performance and features, nothing to complain about, the Ryzen 7 7840U is actually very close to the Z1 Extreme operated by ASUS. However, when it comes to availability, it’s a different story.

AMD which would not have respected the contract?

Perhaps you have supported one of these companies through a crowdfunding campaign? Perhaps you were forced to wait longer than expected to receive your console?

Indiegogo or Kickstarter are not in question. The Chinese manufacturers themselves would not be more at fault. If we are to believe a message published by GPD updating its latest crowdfunding campaign, AMD is responsible.

The turns of phrase are sometimes a little strange, but we quickly understand the problem: AMD simply would not have delivered as many Ryzen 7 7840Us as had been initially decided. An unpleasant surprise that GPD was only able to realize after the second shipment from AMD.

The first deliveries of GPD Win Max 2 (this is the machine we are talking about) were able to take place normally, but then it got stuck. Other manufacturers have reported tight supplies of Ryzen 7 7840U, but without blaming AMD as clearly.

We are obviously awaiting an official reaction from the American firm, but if your Chinese console is a little late, don’t be surprised.
