The Thurgau parliament will certainly remain bourgeois even after election Sunday. The question is whether the SVP can further expand its supremacy.
The SVP is currently by far the strongest party in the Thurgau Grand Council, with 45 of the 130 seats. Then the FDP and the center follow with 18 seats each.
The Greens are the fourth strongest force in the canton, ahead of the SP, which they overtook in the elections four years ago. The other seats go to the GLP, the EVP and the EDU.
SVP with a good starting position
Topics such as migration and security remain topical. SVP party president Ruedi Zbinden says: “We are in a good situation, also in terms of personnel. The goal is to gain one seat per constituency with our lists.” There are five constituencies in Thurgau, which would mean five more seats.

The SVP is already the only party that can initiate a referendum on the authorities on its own; this requires 30 votes. So the SVP alone can ensure that a referendum is held if the law is changed.

Who is ahead: Center or FDP?
The center has a list connection with the EPP in all districts. Together they are already the second strongest faction in the council. The EPP may benefit this year from the fact that the BDP no longer exists and the center has distanced itself somewhat from Christian values with the name change.
Half of the FDP no longer runs
The FDP has a harder time than the center. Although she celebrated some successes in parliament, she has a problem: nine of the 18 previous members of the Grand Council are no longer running. Keyword previous bonus.

The Greens, the SP and the GLP are all about keeping their seats as best as possible. There is currently some unrest between the SP and the Greens: The SP refused to support the Green government candidate Sandra Reinhart. There were then bad words directed at the SP. There are still list connections between the SP and the Greens in all constituencies – so together there should be a better result than next to each other.
Only partial climate alliance
The GLP does not enter into a list with the Greens and the SP in all districts: the climate alliance from the national elections only partially exists. It still exists three times, in one constituency the GLP joined with the center, in one with the FDP.
EDU associated with Upright
The smallest representation in the Grand Council is the EDU. She holds five seats, one seat of the EDU parliamentary group is held by a non-party who was elected as an SP representative four years ago and is now running for Massvoll in the renewal elections.
The EDU is now entering into a connection with Aufrecht Thurgau instead of with the SVP. Aufrecht Thurgau is running in council elections for the first time and has a realistic chance of winning one or two seats. This is less realistic for the Massvoll group, which runs in two districts.
