Grand Theft Auto: Rockstar Games develops sequel to GTA V

Publisher Rockstar Games has announced a sequel to the successful “Grand Theft Auto” franchise. “We are pleased to confirm that development of the next installment of Grand Theft Auto is well underway,” the company said on Friday. Rockstar Games does not reveal any further details about the planned successor.

The new edition follows GTA V and its multiplayer offshoot GTA Online, which were released in 2013 and have since been regularly supplied with new content and updates for new platforms. It was also this “unprecedented longevity of GTA V” that repeatedly raised questions about a successor, explains Rockstar Games.

Until the successor is available, fans will have GTA V and the online version. For both, new versions for the current generation of consoles should appear in mid-March. For Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S or X, Rockstar gives the games new graphics with a resolution of up to 4K and refresh rates of up to 60 frames per second as well as HDR and ray tracing. The updated games were originally scheduled for release in November. There will also be a standalone version of GTA Online on March 15th.

GTA is one of the most successful game franchises to date. In addition to the five main parts, Rockstar has released numerous other editions, including “GTA: Vice City” and “GTA: San Andreas”. GTA V is a bestseller for the publisher with over 155 million copies sold. The GTA franchise is also one of the most controversial video games because of numerous depictions of violence.
