The next GPU generations will be more powerful, but also much more power-hungry. PCI Express 5.0 is used to satisfy the high power consumption.
Nvidia against AMD – but Intel also wants to get involved in the GPU market in 2022.

Nvidia’s current top model Geforce RTX 3090 is designed for a power consumption of up to 350 watts. But the high-end cards of the next GPU generation Ada Lovelace should be allowed to use up to 500 watts. The new chips will probably come onto the market as the RTX 4000 series and will be manufactured using the 5 nanometer process. The step of 8 nanometers allows Nvidia to accommodate significantly more CUDA cores and streaming processors on the GPU, which is supposed to double the gaming performance.
AMD’s new generation RX 7000 with the Navi 31, 32 and 33 graphics chips is not optimized for power saving either, although they are also supposed to be manufactured using the 5-nanometer process. Although the power consumption is rumored to be 450 watts below that of future Nvidia chips, it is around 30 percent higher than AMD’s current Navi 21 generation.
Nvidia develops its GPUs every two years: Ampere Next is planned for 2022 – these GPUs, codenamed Ada Lovelace, will probably come onto the market as the RTX 4000.
Both GPU generations are scheduled to be presented in autumn 2022. Then a suitable power supply connector may also be available: The 16-pin connector is part of the new specification for PCI Express 5.0 and is intended to deliver up to 600 watts via one connection, whereas PCIe connectors can currently deliver a maximum of 75 watts – with the result that current high-end cards have to be connected to the power pack with two or three plugs.
While AMD and Nvidia are in a duel for the top speed, Intel primarily wants to serve beginners and the middle class: The new GPU Arc Alchemist should be found on numerous graphics cards for PCs and notebooks and should be available at the beginning of the year. The top model with eight or 16 GB of memory treats itself to up to 275 watts as a PC version and 120 watts as a laptop version. Since the GPU can also handle current technologies such as ray tracing and AI-assisted super-sampling, many system builders could choose Arc Alchemist to reach customers who do not insist on absolute top speed.
Intel is back in the graphics card business: This year, the CPU manufacturer is launching the Alchemist generation of its ARC GPUs.
Cheaper Arc models with four and six GB of memory should provide additional competition for AMD and Nvidia, since the two GPU sizes have recently neglected this segment. AMD counteracts this with the two new chips RX 6400 (beginners) and RX 6500 XT (middle class). However, Nvidia will continue to focus on the top class in the coming months and will update the current Ampere GPUs of the RTX 3000 series with improved Super or Ti models such as the RTX 3090 Ti. RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 Ti are to be used in notebooks for come into action.
