LONDON (Reuters) – Former finance minister Rishi Sunak, whose resignation this week helped push Boris Johnson to announce his forthcoming departure from 10 Downing Street, stood as a candidate on Friday to succeed him as prime minister .
“Someone has to seize this moment and make the right decisions. That’s why I’m a candidate to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister,” Rishi Sunak said in a video posted on Twitter.
“The decisions we make today will determine whether the next generation of Britons will also have the chance for a brighter future. Are we facing this moment with honesty, seriousness and determination? Or are we telling ourselves tales of comforting fairies that might make us feel better now, but will make our children worse off tomorrow?” he asks.
Rishi Sunak was one of the prime ministers to announce his surprise resignation on Tuesday, hastening the downfall of Boris Johnson, whose government had been embroiled in repeated scandals for months and locked in a new standoff with the government. European Union on Northern Ireland.
