Great Britain: Intruder arrested after entering Windsor Castle grounds

LONDON (Reuters) – A man who entered Windsor Castle, where Queen Elizabeth is spending Christmas, was arrested and taken into custody for possession of an offensive weapon, police said on Saturday.

The 19-year-old, from Southampton, in the south of England, did not enter the buildings and security procedures were quickly triggered, local police in Thames Valley said.

The 95-year-old monarch, who spent much of the COVID-19 pandemic at Windsor Castle, was Christmas there with her son, Prince Charles, wife Camilla and other close family members.

“The man was arrested on suspicion of violation or intrusion into a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon,” said Thames Valley police superintendent Rebecca Mears.

She added that members of the royal family had been informed of the incident, and that police did not believe there had been any danger to the public.

The incident took place around 8:30 am (0830 GMT).
