New successor: Liz Truss replaces Boris Johnson

Liz Truss has prevailed against her competition, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, to become the new British prime minister. According to the Tagesschau, the previous foreign minister prevailed in an internal party vote. The approximately 175,000 party members could vote online or by post. Truss received 81,000 votes, 60,000 went to Sunak.

Truss belongs to the right wing of the party. At the beginning, the politician spoke out against Brexit, but she has since changed her attitude and often talks about the advantages of leaving the EU. During the election campaign, she was particularly convincing with her plan to immediately lower taxes despite the inflation. In addition, her confrontational line towards the EU and populist statements about refugees, leftists, environmental activists and social minorities may have been reasons that convinced her party base, according to the Tagesschau. Rising energy prices are seen as her biggest challenge in her forthcoming term of office.

Queen Elizabeth II will appoint the new Prime Minister Truss on Tuesday at her castle in Balmoral, Scotland. This makes her the third woman at the head of the British government after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. On the same day, the former party leader Boris Johnson is also officially dismissed from his position as prime minister by the Queen. After numerous scandals, including banned “lockdown” celebrations at his official residence, he left office under pressure from his cabinet and the parliamentary group.
