Italy is in deep mourning: After the tragic cable car accident on Monte Mottarone on Lake Maggiore, at least 14 people are dead. A 5-year-old child is still fighting for his life. The shock is deep.
A whole family of Israeli origin is also among the dead, reports the newspaper “La Reppublica”. The man, with his 27-year-old wife and 2-year-old son, traveled to northern Italy for a few days to visit relatives. The medical student wanted to spend Sunday on the mountain with the 83-year-old grandpa and grandma (71).

Loving couple dies in an accident
Whitsunday also ends tragically for the families of an engaged couple from Varese. The 27-year-old woman and her 29-year-old fiancé both died in the fall of the cable car cabin.
According to the authorities, five other people have now also been identified. Among them are a 55-year-old from the village of Vedano Olona in Lombardy and a 28-year-old woman with her 33-year-old Iranian companion from Diamante in the Calabria region.
Two people come from Castel San Giovanni, a town south of the city of Milan. These are a 45-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman. Two fatalities have yet to be identified.
Great sympathy in Italy
The shock runs deep in the region. The Vice President of the Lombardy Region, Letizia Moratti (71), wrote on Twitter: “I am shocked by the tragedy of the Stresa-Mottarone cable car. I offer my condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the seriously injured children. The task now is to determine the causes. “
Marcella Severino (53), Mayor of Stresa, told Rai: “We are deeply sad, devastated. None of us can understand that. ” Pictures show Severino mourning the scene of the accident shortly after the announcement.
