FC Bayern makes the playoffs clear again this time

While weakened Berliners see their playoff chances dwindling in Istanbul, FC Bayern’s EuroLeague season is sure to continue. The Munich basketball players enter the postseason with a clear win. The defense is particularly impressive.

The basketball players from Bayern Munich are again in the playoffs of the EuroLeague. The team of head coach Andrea Trinchieri clearly defeated Red Star Belgrade 82:57 (42:33) and with 13 wins and 12 defeats they can no longer be pushed out of one of the top eight places in the group stage.

Augustine Rubit led Bayern to success with 22 points against the guests coached by former Bayern champion Dejan Radonjic. While the guests had a slight advantage in the first quarter, Bayern turned the game around thanks to 27 points in the second half. After the break, the hosts continued to defend strongly and didn’t allow any points in the first five minutes. Bayern finished the third quarter with a 13:3 run, opened up a gap of 20 points and decided the game early.

Munich had previously suffered three bankruptcies in a row. Last year, Bayern were the first German team to qualify for the quarter-finals. There, however, the Bundesliga club was narrowly defeated by Armani Milan in the fifth game.

“To make the playoffs twice is a great achievement for this club,” said Trinchieri. “This year has been very bumpy. I’m proud of my players. We deserve these playoffs. I think the best is yet to come.” Before the quarter-finals, Munich still has three away games to play in the group phase.

Berlin starts well, but has nothing to add in the final phase

Alba Berlin, on the other hand, just missed a surprise. Despite a strong performance for a long time, the weakened Berliners lost to defending champion Anadolu Efes Istanbul 77:87 (39:36). After the 15th defeat in the 26th game, the capitals have little chance of a playoff spot. Two games are left. The best Berlin throwers were Oscar da Silva with 20 points and Maodo Lo with 15 points.

Coach Israel Gonzalez again had to cope with some failures. In addition to the long-term injury Marcus Eriksson and the corona cases Luke Sikma and Tamir Blatt, center Ben Lammers was also absent due to muscular problems. Winger Louis Olinde returned after a seven-week injury break.

Three days after the surprise win at Fenerbahçe, Alba also started very well against Anadolu. The Berliners picked up the pace and pulled away to 22:9 in the first quarter. But then the Istanbul star ensemble woke up and defended more intensively in the heated atmosphere, coming back point by point.

Immediately after the break, the hosts took the lead for the first time. A 10-0 run in the middle of the third quarter meant that the Berliners were constantly chasing a deficit. Alba fought and got back to a point a good five minutes before the end (69:70). In the final phase, however, the guests were no longer able to counter the experienced Istanbul side.
