In the ongoing Russian war of aggression, both sides are trying to outdo each other with new developments. A company from the country ruled by Putin is now developing a type of carrier for kamikaze drones. This “mother ship” can bring several of the flying objects to a target area.
The Russian company Llc Spc Berkut claims to have built a carrier drone. This unmanned aerial vehicle is called Burya-20, reported the pro-Ukrainian blog Defense Express with reference to Russian media reports.
According to the report, the drone can carry and launch various first-person view (FPV) drones. According to the report, the carrier drone has already been tested and small-scale production is set to begin in order to expand the tests.
It is not known how many FPV drones the Burya-20 can carry. There are also no reports yet about what the design will look like. However, such a “mother ship” for kamikaze drones could significantly increase their range and expand their possible uses accordingly.
Ukraine also develops “mothership” concept
The concept is that a camera on the Burya-20 can detect targets using image processing and transmit this information to the person controlling the carrier drone, who can then make the decision whether an FPV drone should attack a target.
The FPV drone should be able to attack targets 15 kilometers away from the carrier drone. The Burya-20 itself should have a range of 70 kilometers and fly primarily at an altitude of 2,000 to 3,000 meters.
Ukraine is also working on a corresponding “mother ship” for FPV drones, as various media reported in the spring. However, these concepts are apparently not yet operational and are only in a test phase.
