One person was killed and four were injured in a partial bridge collapse for unknown reasons on Sunday in Patras, western Greece, Greek police and media said. “We confirm the death of one person,” a police spokesman told AFP.

The reasons for the collapse for the moment unknown

The ANA news agency and the public broadcaster ERT, citing the ambulance services, claimed that there were 4 injured, who had been transferred to two hospitals in the city. A large-scale rescue operation is underway with firefighters and ambulances on site.

The reasons for the collapse are not known at this stage. The work of art is located on the road that connects the port of Patras, in the Peloponnese peninsula (southwest), to Athens.

However, according to Efthymis Lekkas, the president of the OASP earthquake protection organization, quoted by the ERT channel, the bridge was experiencing stability problems which were known to the authorities. Restoration work began in 2021 at a cost of more than six million euros, according to ERT.
