Green boss in the “early start”: Lang: oil embargo must come

Lang: Oil embargo must come

Green leader Lang also sees risks for Europe in an economic crisis in the Global South. Countries like Russia and China could offer support and thus expand their power globally. With the oil embargo, she wants to push the pace.

The party leader of the Greens, Ricarda Lang, supports the plan of Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck to push through an international price cap for oil. “We are willing to pay a higher price, but we are not willing to pay any price,” Lang said on “ntv Frühstart”. It is now necessary to prevent countries in the Global South from falling into a massive economic crisis as a result of the price increases. “Otherwise countries like Russia and China will be there again and make the countries an offer.” It would therefore be right to act as a joint customer with as many Western countries as possible. “If it is to work globally, we need stable prices,” said the Green Party leader.

In the dispute over a European oil embargo, the party leader expects a solution. “I am optimistic and convinced that an oil embargo must come,” said Lang. “We don’t want to continue to use our money to strengthen Russia’s war infrastructure. Because we know that Putin’s profits are particularly high when it comes to oil.” Therefore, all European countries now have to make their contribution to the oil embargo.

When asked what could be offered to countries like Hungary so that they too support the embargo, the Greens leader said: “We can talk about support options and deadlines. But Orbán must also be willing to go along with an oil embargo.” Hungary’s head of government is currently still opposed to the question of an EU oil embargo. According to Lang, Hungary must do this in the interests of the European continent and, above all, Eastern Europe.

She pointed out that Eastern Europe had made itself very vulnerable in recent years due to the goodwill and belittlement towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. Therefore, the embargo would not only be about solidarity with Ukraine, but above all with all Eastern European partners.
