Greta Thunberg: Sharp criticism of the cult around her person

Greta Thunberg became a star thanks to her fight against climate change. A circumstance that she uses to criticize our society.

The documentary "Ich bin Greta" (in cinemas from October 16) about the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg (17) premiered on Saturday (September 19) at the Toronto Film Festival. In the course of this, the 17-year-old expressed criticism of the "celebrity cult" in a virtual panel discussion, which has not left her without a trace. "Instead of concentrating on the climate and listening to scientific statements, people (…) talk about me and want to take photos with me," quotes "The Hollywood Reporter" from Thunberg's speech.

This applies especially to politicians who wanted to get out of the affair with her media-effective appearances, the young Swede believes: "Standing next to a climate activist feels comfortable because you pretend to care about the environment without having to do anything. " She even criticized Nathan Grossman's documentary about her fight against climate change. It could have focused less on itself and even more on the environmental crisis. At the same time, however, that is also one of the intentions of the documentary: to show people how "absurd the celebrity cult we live in is".
