When we get grey hair, the first thought is often that we have to dye our hair from now on. But grey is a wonderful colour and deserves more attention. With grey blending we have found the perfect middle ground and can even bring our grey hair into the foreground. Stars like Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker offer the right inspiration.

What is grey blending? Sarah Jessica Parker shows you how!

Sarah Jessica Parker is currently more present than ever thanks to the series “And Just Like That…” and is showing us the latest hair trend for grey hair with confidence and pride. We can learn a lot from her. She is now showing off her long mane in the trendy grey blending. The actress combines her dark blonde hair perfectly with her grey roots. The transition is smooth, which means that the different tones create a symbiosis and the grey roots shine through slightly. With this hairstyle, constant re-dyeing is no longer necessary and the result – with proper care – is a natural colour gradient that highlights the hair colour.

How does grey blending work?

Dyeing grey hair, especially the roots, can be very time-consuming and requires a lot of attention. That’s why we’re all the more excited about this colour trend. Grey blending is particularly suitable for women who already have grey hair and want to freshen it up a bit. With this technique, the grey can be highlighted or subtly worked into the hair tone. Different shades are mixed together and evenly blended, for example as fine highlights, as more noticeable block strands or with the well-known balayage technique, which looks particularly natural. During the process, the strands are darkened or lightened to ensure special moments of shine and to create a flowing gradient. In Jennifer Aniston’s case, the small grey strands at the roots show how well grey blending works on dark blonde hair with highlights.

How long does Grey Blending last?

The durability of this dyeing technique is the same as with all other colorings. After eight to 12 weeks, the tones should be refreshed so that they do not lose their intensity. Otherwise, the hair quickly looks dull and straw-like. A fresh cut also helps.

How to do grey blending?

Grey blending requires a certain skill, namely understanding the compatibility of colours. Ultimately, the grey strands should blend seamlessly into the rest of the hair. To achieve this, different colours come into play that harmonize perfectly with each other and thus highlight the grey in a positive way. It is therefore advisable to go to a hair salon for grey blending. Above all to get advice – but also for the colouring itself.

How many times do I have to repeat this?

Since grey blending involves using strands, it is sufficient to repeat the technique every eight to ten weeks. The refresh is mainly intended for the growing-out roots, but the lengths can also be renewed every three months.

Grey blending with brown hair – is it possible?

At first glance, brown hair and grey hair don’t look particularly similar. Some are dark, others are light. However, they can work just as well together as they do with blonde hair. To make grey blending possible with brown hair, compatibility is particularly important, as several shades are needed. In order to seamlessly blend a dark brown into the grey strands, lighter strands are needed. These don’t necessarily have to be blonde, however, and can also be lighter shades of brown. Ash shades are best, i.e. those that have fewer warm reflections and can therefore blend in better with the cooler grey. This gives the impression that you’ve simply had a few lighter strands added, so the grey doesn’t necessarily stand out.

You can also have the grey blending done with block strands to bring out the grey even more. This technique looks particularly lively in curly hair.

How to care for your hair after grey blending

In order for grey hair to continue to shine in all its glory, it needs a little more attention. Because grey hair contains fewer pigments, it requires intensive care, which focuses primarily on providing plenty of moisture. It is best to use shampoos that do not dry out the hair and use a Hair maskIt is also important to use care products that have been specially designed for grey hair to keep the hair colour fresh and intense. This applies both when you want to wash your hair and when you want to blow-dry it. It is particularly important to use heat protection so that the colour retains its shine.

Grey Blending vs. Highlights – which is better and what is the difference?

There are now a whole range of coloring techniques to enhance or change the hair. Highlights are still one of the most popular, but are they really any different to grey blending? The fact is: with both techniques, the hair is colored strand by strand. The difference is that with grey blending, the strands are not all colored. The grey, natural hair retains its original tone, while the surrounding strands are adjusted to match it. With highlights, accents are placed in the hair, which can make the hair not only look fuller, but also more vibrant. This emphasizes curls particularly well.
