Things have always been hot behind the scenes of Grey’s Anatomy. Leading actress Ellen Pompeo recently commented on a scandal from 12 years ago: Katherine Heigl’s expulsion.

It wasn’t until more than a decade later that the Meredith actress revealed that Heigl was ahead of her time by criticizing the 17-hour days of filming. Ultimately, therefore, the character Izzie was written out of the show and got a rather unsatisfactory ending for fans.

After being fired from the hospital in Season 6, Izzie files for divorce from Alex Karev and starts a new life outside of Seattle. In Season 16, Alex learns that Izzie has had twins and he is the father. So he also leaves Seattle to be with Izzie.

With Pompeo and Heigl’s past acknowledgment of interest in giving Izzie a happy ending, it might not be so unlikely that Katherine Heigl will reprise the role of Izzie.

She wouldn’t be the first from the “Grey’s Anatomy” cast to unexpectedly reappear. That’s how Patrick Dempsey was brought back, although his character Dr. Derek Shepherd is no longer even among the living.

Izzie’s return could even straighten out two unsatisfactory exits: Izzie’s and Alex’s. It remains to be seen whether Katherine Heigl has forgiven those responsible for the series and will actually return. Until then, you can catch the latest episodes of Season 18 streaming weekly on Disney+ and Joyn.
