“Grey’s Anatomy” has gone through many ups and downs in the past few weeks and months. But one thing the series seems to have always been sure of is the love of its fans and its creator, Shonda Rhimes.
Rhimes made her breakthrough as a producer with “Grey’s Anatomy” and if she had her way, she would accompany her series until the end of her life. She reveals this in an interview with the magazine “E! News”.
I might be a very old lady by the time we get to the final season because it doesn’t seem to stop, which is wonderful. I feel like the world really belongs to the fans and the fans have always been clear about what they want.

Season 19 marked one of the biggest changes in the history of the doctor series. Not only the longtime leading lady Ellen Pompeo, but also the showrunner Krista Vernoff left the series at the end of the 19th season. Pompeo’s departure in particular is said to have been “heartbreaking” for everyone.
Ellen is an amazing person. We chatted the whole time and talked about when it was time to leave and how it would feel. We’ve had these discussions a lot because I’ve always wanted to keep her excited, motivated and having as much fun as when I first started.
But no farewell is forever, not even Pompeo’s. Rhimes stressed that the actress can return at any time, as can any cast member who has left Grey’s Anatomy over the 19 seasons so far.
Whether it will continue for many more years as before with the doctor series cannot be foreseen at the moment. At the beginning of 2023, “Grey’s Anatomy” was extended for a 20th season. With a new showrunner and without Ellen Pompeo.
