On March 21, 2023, the winners of the 59th Grimme Prize will be announced. Those responsible have now published this year’s nominations in advance. As was to be expected, the productions of the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF will also dominate in 2023. Remarkable: The content of the major German private broadcasters RTL and ProSieben/Sat.1 only made it onto the lists three times. In contrast, the Netflix streaming service is already a respectable success with four German productions.

“1899” and “Kleo” in the running for the Grimme Prize in the fiction category

In the fiction category, for example, the two Netflix series “1899” and “Kleo” are up against a phalanx of public productions. The two streaming service successes have to compete against “The Wannsee Conference”, “The Mayor” (both ZDF) and the drama “Kalt” (WDR). Netflix is also putting two promising candidates into the running in the Information & Culture and Entertainment categories with “Gladbeck: The Hostage Drama” and “Queer Eye Germany”.

Other nominees include Jan Böhmermann’s “ZDF Magazin Royale” (41) or a special edition of Tim Mälzer’s (51) “Kitchen Crew” (VOX) in the “Entertainment” category. The series “Ze Network” (RTL) with David Hasselhoff (70) and Henry Hübchen (75) in the leading roles is considered a surprise nomination in the fiction category. ProSieben is hoping for a special prize for Joko Winterscheidt (44) and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf (39) for “Joko and Klaas 15 minutes live”. The nominated program drew attention to the uprisings in Iran.

The nomination committee selected 69 productions and individual performances from 780 submissions. From the end of January, the jury will meet again in Marl for the first time since the corona pandemic in order to isolate 16 Grimme Prize winners from the nominees. After the announcement on March 21st, the award ceremony will take place on April 21st in the theater of the city of Marl.
