  • The Swiss Army has selected a new surface-to-surface missile system.
  • The choice fell on the tank destroyer Spike LR2 from the German-Israeli company Eurospike, as reported by the Federal Office for Armaments (Armasuisse).
  • It has been tried and tested and is relatively cheap.

As Armasuisse further reports, the selected type of weapon is already being used by various European armies. In the evaluation, the system had the highest military utility value and was also the most attractive offer from an economic point of view.

How many pieces of the new weapon are to be procured and how expensive the package will be is currently still being clarified, Armasuisse reports. Details would be presented to Parliament with the Army Message in 2024.

No tank integration

The current system, the TOW anti-tank guided missile, dates back to the 1990s and will be decommissioned next year. The new guided missile is intended to ensure that the ground forces of the Swiss army can engage armored targets over long distances.

A technical fault occurred during a flight attempt with a new Swiss Army ADS-15 reconnaissance drone. However, the drone landed safely. Flight operations with the new drones will be suspended until the reasons for the disruption have been clarified.

The flight test took place at the Emmen LU military airfield on March 17, according to the Federal Armaments Office (Armasuisse).

The first of a total of six new reconnaissance drones from Israel were only handed over to the Swiss Air Force at the end of January, years later than planned. The technical fault occurred during ground and flight tests with the third delivered drone.

Various European and American manufacturers were asked. According to Armasuisse, two companies met the military requirements for the system. For the time being, the chosen system is to be used by the infantry on a mobile basis. In a first step, the integration into a carrier platform – for example into a tank – will be dispensed with, the statement said. However, the system offers the possibility for later vehicle integration.
