GT3 hunter – Porsche Mission R: Zuffenhausen increased to 1000

While wealthy customers are licking their fingers for new derivatives of the classic 911 and 718 combustion sports cars, Porsche is on a mission. It’s about electrification, without which nothing works at the IAA, which has been relocated to Munich this year (until September 12). And so the Zuffenhausen-based sports car manufacturer comes up with a racing study called Mission R, in which no fuel is burned, but electrical currents flow.

And that in an impressive way: With 80 kWh battery capacity and an output of up to 800 kW / 1088 PS, the sports car provides indications of a customer sport competition vehicle with high dynamic potential. The sprint from 0 to 100 km / h takes only 2.5 seconds, the top is over 300 km / h – and thus roughly on the level of a 718 Cayman GT4 (420 PS, 304 km / h). The continuous output is throttled to 500 kW / 680 PS. Charging the battery from five percent to 80 percent of its capacity takes a quarter of an hour, provided it can be charged with 340 kW.

While the body structure of the sports car is based on flax fibers from agriculture, the decarbonisation of the safety structure reaches its limits: the safety cage and roof structure are made of carbon fiber composite. Incidentally, the sleek shape of the Porsche Mission R gives very specific indications of a future production model, namely a fully electric 718 Cayman.

It remains to be seen whether King Customer will warm up to whirring electric motors or whether he will continue to prefer internal combustion engines in the future. For example, Porsche only recently had to be instructed by customers that the abolition of manual gearshifts will not be accepted. (aum / jm)
