GTA 6: Developers of Control, The Last of Us, Horizon and more share prototypes of their games in reaction to the leak

The leak of more than 90 videos of GTA 6 has shaken Rockstar and inevitably had an echo throughout the entire industry, since we are talking about an extraordinary license, which crushes the rest of the competition in market share.

There is obviously a lot to say about this leak, but we must admit that we perhaps did not expect it to reveal how much the world of video game development is still too dark for the general public. After all, everyone knows the game isn’t over, but that didn’t stop a lot of people from saying a lot of nonsense on the fact that the visuals should already be finalized for the gamewhether in bad faith or simple ignorance of the subject.

Faced with these criticisms and the incomprehension of the general public, several developers around the world have stepped up to release images of what their games looked like before releasein order to normalize the thing and to show that yes, it is quite normal that GTA 6 looks like this at some point in its development.

All games go through this, even the best and most beautiful

This is for example the case of Paul Ehreth, lead designer on controlthe last game of Remedy. He shared a video where you can see gameplay footage from the early development of the game, to show that no, the visuals are not the first thing that is determined in a game.

We see a very different Jesse (yes, it’s not Pam from The Office with a gun, even if you can see the connection) test your powers in settings that are far from being finalized, to better illustrate the fact that there are plenty of steps before the final game looks like what we have when it comes out on the market.

Naughty Dog also shared prototypes regarding The Last of Us with minimalist decorations, far from the photorealism of the final product.

Same thing for Guerrilla Games with the prototypes of Horizon Zero Dawnwhere Aloy is not present and where we see a Killzone in TPS with a soldier shooting a dinosaur almost in Playmobil. Without speaking about Sea of Thieveswhich looked like a game from the early 3D era when it was first developed.

All this to say that yes, it is normal to see that a game like GTA at some point looks like what we’ve seen in the leaks, and that’s not a bad sign. It’s not even a sign of anything, it’s just the natural order of game development (just look at the videos shared by the studio behind the upcoming skateboarding to fully understand it). So there’s no need to worry or have a fixed idea of what the game will look like.
