GTA 5 in virtual reality is possible! This mode amazed a former Rockstar developer. 11 years later, there is still no official support, has this technology been abandoned by the American studio?

GTA 5’s transition to virtual reality is finally available thanks to Luke Ross, a fan of the license. Combined with an ultra-realistic graphics enhancement, Razed Modscet’s NaturalVision Remastered overhaul, the game stunned a former developer. Bela Kampis, who spent a year as a 3D programmer on GTA 5, shared his amazement after seeing a clip of a player using it. For Kampis, seeing the game transformed in this way was a shock: “Wow, I almost don’t recognize the game I worked so hard on. It’s crazy !explained the former Rockstar on in a post that has since been deleted.

Obstacles encountered at Rockstar

Bela Kampis’ revelation raises questions about Rockstar’s VR policy. He mentions that the company’s management’s lack of interest in this way of playing contributed to his decision to leave the studio. This suggests a gap between the developers’ vision and the studio’s priorities. Additionally, Kampis points out that Rockstar’s desire to port it to Red Dead Redemption 2, a game with a radically different theme, also weighed in his decision to leave. For the moment, there is still no official version of the different titles in the VR license. Fans are still hoping that their wish can come true with GTA VI, which according to some rumors, would be entirely playable in virtual reality. However, there is no communication from the studio confirming this.


The limits of modders’ freedom

Although Rockstar’s lack of official support for virtual reality in GTA 5 has opened the door for modders to create alternative experiences, this freedom has its limits. In 2022, modder Luke Ross received a DMCA takedown notice from parent company Take-Two Interactive after offering VR mods for several games, including GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Despite his arguments that the mods were not built from Take-Two’s software and require legitimate copies of the games to work, the mods had to be removed. Despite everything, they are still available on Github although the company does not see it very favorably…
