Guadeloupe: five men sentenced after January urban violence

Five men were sentenced on Friday to terms of up to one year in prison for looting perpetrated in January, during urban violence in Guadeloupe against a backdrop of social crisis and contestation of the vaccination obligation. The defendants, aged 19 to 44, were presented to the prosecution and “immediately judgedFriday for several lootings committed during the nights of January 19 to 21, 2022. One of the defendants, in whose house a weapon was found during a search, was sentenced to one year in prison with a warrant of committal. Three others were sentenced to six months without immediate incarceration, according to Mr. Desjardins. The fifth defendant was given a sentence of community service, while a sixth man, who was also already imprisoned, was summoned to appear before the criminal court at a later date.

The police said on their Facebook page that they seized during searches “a shotgun” and “a dummy automatic pistol as well as telephone equipment from a robbed sign“. Some 21 businesses had been looted in two days in Pointe-à-Pitre from January 19 to 21, 2022, according to the same source.
