Appearing in 2014, Signal is now one of the most popular encrypted messengers on smartphones, even siphoning users from the giant WhatsApp.

Recommended by Edward Snowden and the European Commission, the application is nevertheless intended to be accessible to all. It has the ambition to attract more and more users by adding functionalities sometimes inspired by other popular applications. With that in mind, its latest beta sees the addition of a…Stories tab.

End-to-end encrypted Stories

At the moment, the feature looks a lot like what you find on Snapchat or Instagram. Thus, Greyson Parrelli, developer at Signal, explains: “ Stories allow you to create and share images, videos and texts with your friends on Signal, which will automatically disappear after 24 hours. He also adds: “ You always have full control over who you share your Stories with. You can share them with all your Signal contacts, or with a custom list of friends, or with any of your Signal groups. When you share Stories with groups, all group members can see, share, react to, and reply to that Story. Of course, confidentiality is emphasized, and everything is end-to-end encrypted. The app even offers to automatically blur faces or let users do it manually.

Signal is funded by a non-profit organization, but also by user donations. We can therefore expect that the final version of his Stories will be in line with the feedback, for the moment positive, from the latter. Although the developers haven’t indicated a release date, you can already test the feature by signing up for the beta on Android and iOS.

Signal is an excellent instant messaging application that has nothing to envy to WhatsApp when it comes to functionality. It is one of the best solutions on the market in terms of security and confidentiality of exchanges, but it shows limits for professional use.
