A life with fashion icon Guido Maria Kretschmer at our side – how nice would that be? Unfortunately, that wish may never come true – which is why we’re trying to offer the next best thing: In our “Ask Guido” section, readers can address their questions directly to the designer. Which shoes are chic and comfortable? How can I cleverly conceal my “wave arms”?

Ask Guido: What clothes can I wear after a mastectomy?

The reader had to have both breasts amputated due to breast cancer, which is why her stomach was “unfavorably emphasized”, as she writes. “I want to wear more beautiful, feminine dresses for this spring and summer. Without breasts, some dresses don’t fall as well.” So your question is:

What type of dress would be better for my figure?

That’s what Guido would advise: “I think what would be good for her would be dresses with an ‘Eggshape’ cut, which are a little reminiscent of the 60s. This creates a bit of décolleté from the start and then it is not so noticeable if there is not a lot of breasts. Shoulder pleats placed at the top would also help immensely. There are also dresses that have dropped shoulders that are slightly gathered at the top – and they conjure up volume and a décolleté on top. In the place where the breasts would otherwise be, there are folds and the fabric flows down.

My basic tip: Sit on legs, legs, legs! So it’s better to choose dresses that aren’t that long, but a bit flared at the top. This is the perfect shape for you. Shorts can be cute, as can skirts, especially if she has good legs, as she says. I would also recommend dresses with a slight wrap look, where, for example, there is a second layer that you can pull over your shoulder at the top. Trapezoidal tops would also be a good idea.

In terms of quality, I wouldn’t choose anything that’s too tight or anything that doesn’t wrinkle. And if she’s not a fan of floral patterns, stripes are also great, preferably ones that are asymmetrical, meaning wide and thin stripes in different versions, for example.

You could still wear a bra, especially if you use it as an “optimizer,” which adds a bit of volume.”
