Following the upheavals caused by the pandemic, it is on television that we finally discover Guillaume Brac’s new and wonderful opus, On boarding, which nevertheless reserves its cinematographic charms for a theatrical release scheduled for the month of July. Brac, 44, has a handful of films to his credit (A world without women, Thunder, Treasure Island), is, to put it as we think, one of the only real successors in France of the master filibuster Jacques Rozier (Farewell Filipina, 1962; On the Orouët side, 1976; Maine Ocean, 1985…). The same zany carelessness, the same finesse of touch, the same sentimental let-slip, the same pulsation of the life that goes, the same feeling of breeze in the nostrils, the same taste for wandering, for tenderness, for freedom.
We are embarking here in Paris in the footsteps of Felix and Alma, who give themselves at first glance, as two very young people know how to do, on a beautiful summer night. Félix is a muscular young Zazou who works to maintain his level. Alma, a young student who joined the family home in Drôme Provençale the next day for the summer season.
No doubt, even though she would have given him her mobile number, the beauty is about to classify, the next day, her adventure of the day before. No doubt the boy, a caregiver, should spend his summer working in Paris to put a little butter in the spinach. But then, the outburst of love acting on his own account, Félix also decided to join Alma in the South and, not content to be unreasonable, to make him a double-edged sword as it is known, the surprise.
In order to put himself even more at risk – but also for practical and financial reasons for organizing the trip – he manages, not without difficulty, to convince his friend Chérif to accompany him. Weight and feet on the ground, employee of small area, the latter pretext, way Four Hundred Blows, the death of his grandmother to take flight. To add an icing on the cake, the filmmaker their deputy Edouard, son of mom polo-Bermuda who takes them in hitchhiking and who will end – not daring to bring the car that was stamped by him to the latter – by joining in the adventure. of the reconquest undertaken by Félix.
Color of feeling
Because Alma, as one could suppose it, does not take a good eye the unexpected reappearance of Felix on his place of family vacation, and bluntly lets him know it. The boy, for his part, likes to do battle. On the sluggishness of the resort – ice creams, village square, nautical center, excursions – a certain number of bittersweet adventures emerge from this brutal reunion, at the same time as the opportunity given to the other characters to work to their own luck, especially sentimental.
