Visiting the Toronto Film Festival to give a conference, Guillermo del Toro spoke on the subject that is agitating Hollywood at the moment: artificial intelligence.
Since its beginnings, Guillermo del Toro’s cinema has been populated by monsters of all kinds. But he has never looked into artificial intelligence, a subject that has frightened Hollywood for many months, and presents itself as one of the causes of the current actors’ and screenwriters’ strike.
Passing through at the Toronto Film Festivala few months after winning the Oscar for Best Animated Film thanks to Pinocchio, the director spoke about artificial intelligence during the conference he was giving.
“People ask me if I’m worried about artificial intelligence, but I tell them it’s the natural stupidity that scares me. Because it’s just a tool, right?”declares the director of Pan’s Labyrinth.
“If someone wants a movie made by an AI, give it to them immediately. I don’t care about people who want to be satisfied and get something shitty quickly.”

On paper, the filmmaker is not fundamentally against the use of artificial intelligence. And doesn’t seem to be any more afraid of it than that. But he affirms that its success or failure will depend on the use that Man makes of it and the vision that it will help (or not) to develop on the screen. “Alternatively, why not buy a printer, print Mona Lisa and say you made it?”
Guillermo del Toro is currently working on a live-action adaptation of Frankenstein for Netflix. The main roles in the film will be played by Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield and Mia Goth.
