Gunman injures four at German university

BERLIN (Reuters) – A man with a rifle wounded four people on Monday when he opened fire at an amphitheater in the university town of Heidelberg in southwestern Germany before killing himself, police said German.

“Four people injured, some seriously, no longer in danger, perpetrator dead, only one alleged perpetrator,” the police wrote on Twitter.

After opening fire in the amphitheater, the assailant fled and then turned his gun on himself, a police spokesman told Reuters. The assailant’s motive is not yet known, he added.

According to the Bild newspaper, it is a student.

The police and emergency services deployed in large numbers in the Neuenheimer Feld university district in Heidelberg, located a few dozen kilometers from the border with France.

Founded in 1386, the University of Heidelberg is the oldest in Germany.
