“Gunpoweder Milkshake” is all about action and girl power. The film also manages without sexualized looks.

Empathy and strength are not opposites. This is shown by the action comedy “Gunpowder Milkshake”, which starts in German cinemas on December 2nd. Karen Gillan (34), known as the cyborg warrior Nebula in “Guardians of the Galaxy” or Ruby Roundhouse in “Jumanji”, slips into the role of the professional killer Sam. It should no longer be a secret that action films by the 34-year-old Briton are popular. The predominantly female cast around Gillan consists of Lena Headey (48, “300”), Carla Gugino (50, “San Andreas”) and Angela Bassett (63, “Black Panther”) as well as young actress Chloe Coleman (12, “The spy of next door”).

“Gunpowder Milkshake”: A professional killer with motherly feelings

The professional killer Sam (Gillan) is one of the best in her field. After her mother Scarlet (Headey) left her, “The Company” trained her, for whom her mother had already worked. For the criminal, male-run company, Sam conscientiously does what she is asked to do. Until one day she is supposed to kill a man who has stolen money from the “company”. The professional killer does not have the heart to leave his daughter to her fate alone – and takes a stand against “the company”. She receives support from her mother, who appears out of nowhere after 15 years – along with three of her old friends.

Feminist, strong and emotional: “Gunpowder Milkshake” doesn’t need sexy superheroes

Skirtight corsages, high hooks and eye-catching make-up? Women have been portrayed as sexy and revealing as possible in action films long enough. “Gunpowder Milkshake” refrains from it. The professional killer Sam, on the other hand, relies on a slouch hat and wide coat – a successful statement. The ladies around Sam’s mother Scarlet show that not only young vegetables can take up arms. Three generations work together to protect the young girl’s life and do not shy away from any risk. Big feelings are not neglected.

Action fans in particular get their money’s worth with “Gunpowder Milkshake”: One fight scene chases the next. It doesn’t get boring because the creative stunts always have a surprise and a laugh in store. Karen Gillan is convincing across the board as a tough, but also soulful young woman who discovers her mother’s instinct. What is missing? At least one Y chromosome could have been on the “good side”. In the end, however, it remains a gender battle between a bevy of men and five strong women.
