Guterres (UN) pleads for the return of Russian cereals and fertilizers to the markets

ISTANBUL, Aug 20 (Reuters) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday called on governments and private companies to find ways to allow Russian cereals and fertilizers as well as Ukrainian cereals to return to world markets, in accordance with a agreement reached last month.

“The other part of this comprehensive agreement is unimpeded access to world markets for Russian food and fertilizers which are not subject to sanctions,” Antonio Guterres said during an Istanbul press conference. “It’s important that all governments and the private sector work together to bring them back to market.”

“Getting more food and fertilizer out of Ukraine and Russia is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices for consumers,” the UN secretary-general added the day after a trip to Odessa, a port in southern Ukraine from where cereal exports have recently resumed after Turkish mediation.
