The Taiwanese semiconductor giant has suffered a ransomware attack from hackers demanding a huge ransom!
The semiconductor field is globally dominated by TSMC, especially when it comes to high-tech components. Suffice to say that when a group of this ilk is the victim of hacking, the stakes quickly take on a very large dimension!
A ransom of 70 million euros
The management of TSMC must look gray in recent days. The group has just been the victim of a ransomware attack from the LockBit group which, according to the Taiwanese company, affected one of its suppliers. A security breach would thus have compromised a certain amount of information for which TSMC will have to pay.
The hackers simply asked the world leader in semiconductors for a ransom of 70 million euros. To justify the particularly substantial amount requested, they simply relied on the confidential information they were able to obtain, and according to which the company’s annual turnover would be around 52.7 billion euros. They give TSMC until August 6 to comply with their request.
Sensitive data in the balance?
The looters of the Net would have something to do harm to TSMC, since they would be, if we believe them, in possession of very sensitive confidential information. According to Kinmax Technology, the integration service provider that was compromised by the ransomware, the information stolen relates to the default configurations of system installations provided to its customers as well as their names. It is also interesting to note that this company works for giants like Microsoft or NVIDIA.
The activities of the LockBit group have been known since 2019. Organized according to the Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) structure, through which it rents or sells the ransomware then used by third parties, it claims to have been at the origin of attacks against nearly 1,800 entities worldwide. Five years prior, TSMC had already been the victim of a WannaCry ransomware attack.
