Hair discoloration, shall I get started? : Current Woman The MAG

In which cases is it recommended?
Bleaching is useful for those who want to lighten their natural color by several tones, but also for those who want to switch to a completely different color. In the case of brunettes who want to become blondes or browns who want to give their color a little pep: the discoloration allows you to completely change your look. But be careful not to abuse it, it is not a practice that can be repeated every month. It must remain punctual, because, after bleaching, the hair is damaged and dry.

Bleaching can also be used to strip color or bring some light to the hair by only applying it to a few strands.

On the other hand, in case of perm or straightening, it is necessary to wait 2 weeks before being able to carry out a discoloration.

At the hairdresser
It uses a volume system, that is to say degrees of oxidation that it will gradually increase. It will start with the half-lengths and ends and end with the roots which discolour more quickly because of the heat given off by the skull.

Hair is never left simply bleached, so hairdressing professionals will use a color called "pastellization" when it comes to achieving platinum blonde or icy blonde results.

At home
Even if it is wiser to put your hair in the hands of an expert, today there are bleaching products that are effective and easy to apply at home. It is especially important to follow the instructions, and possibly get help from a friend to take care of the back part of the skull. The secret is above all to be organized: first, adapt the amount of product to the length of your hair. For short to mid-length hair, a box should suffice, but for long hair, you shouldn't risk running out of product!

Material side: plastic gloves, a glass bowl (especially not metal), a clean brush, a clean towel, but not afraid of being stained, a color of your choice. A coloring? Yes, because we don't just leave hair bleached: we give it back a little substance and shine with real color.

The roots discolor much faster than the lengths. There are therefore two possibilities:

  • Spread the bleaching product only on the roots using a brush, leave to act for the necessary time and rinse, then bleach the lengths, being careful not to iron on the roots.
  • Spread the product first on the lengths, leave to act and then continue on the roots, before rinsing the entire hair. If the lengths need 30 minutes and the roots only 10 minutes, this means that you have to spread the product on the roots 20 minutes after having done the lengths.

And after ?
Discoloration is not trivial for the hair. It removes the melanin pigments contained in the hair fibers by an oxidative action. It is very important to maintain the hair well with shampoos suitable for damaged or colored hair, to prevent the pretty blonde from turning straw yellow.

Beyond shampoos, maintenance with nourishing masks or hair oils is essential to keep hair strong and shiny.

When the roots start to be too visible, it is possible to bleach them without ironing the lengths. Another solution is to do a new coloring to change the head again.
