Hal Holbrook is dead. The multiple Emmy winner, best known for his "Mark Twain" performance, turned 95.

Emmy and Tony winner Hal Holbrook is dead. The actor, best known for his role as Mark Twain and who played the character on his one-man show for decades, died on January 23 at the age of 95. This was confirmed by his personal assistant, Joyce Cohen, of the "New York Times".

Holbrook played the American writer in a show called "Mark Twain Tonight!" Which he directed himself and for which he won a Tony Award in 1966 in the category "Best Actor". He went to Broadway several times with the show, which he launched in 1954, and is said to have played it more than 2,200 times.

An impressive career

Hal Holbrook also won five Emmy Awards over the course of his career and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Into the Wild". He was also seen in "Die Unbrechlichen" (1976) as the anonymous informant Deep Throat. The actor also appeared in the horror film "The Fog" (1980), in the Holocaust drama "Julia" (1977), in Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" (1987), "The Company" (1993), " Men of Honor "(2000) or Steven Spielberg's" Lincoln "(2012).

The actor has also made guest appearances in series, including "Grey's Anatomy", "Hawaii Five-0" and "Sons of Anarchy". In the 80s he played US President Abraham Lincoln in the cult TV saga "Torches in the Storm".
