Halloween: 3 must-watch horror films on MUBI

On the occasion of Halloween, look back at 3 films to (re)discover on the MUBI platform to get in the mood.

Specializing in international auteur cinema, the MUBI platform offers a wide selection of rare films that are likely to appeal to moviegoers. To give yourself a nice scare, here is a selection of three films not to be missed for Halloween.

SUSPIRIA (1977)

Dario Argento is one of the great masters of the giallo – Italian horror subgenre – and with Suspiria he certainly signs one of the jewels of his career. The story follows an American, Suzy (Jessica Harper) who joins the Friborg dance school. As people disappear, the young woman realizes that something is wrong. What if his school was home to a witch?

Wild Bunch (France)

Suspiria is a true cinema experience, both kitsch and virtuoso. The director knows how to capture a strange atmosphere that leads the viewer to uneasiness as the heroine rushes into the clutches of Helena Markos. Above all, the film is still as scary and the soundtrack by Goblin has a lot to do with it.

GREEN ROOM (2016)

After the excellent Blue Ruin, filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier continues his plunge into brutal violence with Green Room. The film follows a punk music group that travels through small towns to perform. The nightmare begins when he stumbles upon an audience like no other: a gang of skinheads who know no bounds in terror.

Green Room is not really a horror film, but the feeling of angst that emanates from it puts it at the top of the list of nuggets to see on Halloween night. As soon as hell begins, the tension does not stop. Jeremy Saulnier goes even further in uninhibited violence and films humans at their most monstrous. The perfect opportunity to discover a Patrick Stewart like you’ve never seen him before.

A KNIFE IN THE HEART (2018)

Change of style with this dreamlike feature film by Yann Gonzalez. A knife in the heart pays homage to the exploitation films of the seventies and offers a trip into the gay world threatened by a serial killer. The French director thus invokes the spirit of William Friedkin’s Cruising for this surprising, kitsch and daring horror thriller.

A knife in the heart is especially to be seen for its visual beauty and its very rare cinema proposal in the current landscape. Yann Gonzalez also offers Vanessa Paradis a dark and mysterious role that should not leave anyone indifferent.
