“Halloween Kills”: an escalation of violence

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – WHY NOT

At first, everything is a bit confusing. Halloween kills seems to hook up with the previous episode of the franchise, Halloween, shot in 2018 by the same director, and who left the monster burning in a cellar. But a number of situations and characters refer to the original film, the masterpiece and unrivaled work of John Carpenter, shot in 1978.

This new title therefore revives the game by imagining a coalition of citizens of the small town of Haddonfield turning into a militia to put an end to the homicidal actions of a masked killer with supernatural resistance capacities. The film’s moral message seems somewhat agreed: Can the need to confront evil turn honest citizens into barbarians?

Rather, the film is distinguished by a clear increase in violence. The number of victims and scenes of a great invention in graphic brutality gore indeed marks a significant quantitative leap compared to this kind of productions. What, to find in this new avatar, a nihilistic and desperate dimension which makes him escape a little from the routine.

American film by David Gordon Green. With Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, James Jude Courtney (1:46).
