You want to climb a little up the popularity scale? Then all you have to do is use a simple trick.

People are different – of course. But in the end we all have one thing in common: We want to be liked! To achieve this, we use a variety of strategies. We are particularly friendly, avoid conflicts, make others laugh… Unfortunately, our plan doesn’t always work out.

How does the halo effect work?

One method that is particularly effective is to take advantage of the halo effect. What is behind it? In principle, the halo effect means that a certain quality in a person outshines all others. For example, if you are particularly polite, other positive qualities are also attributed to you, such as intelligence or a sense of humor.

And what exactly do I have to do now?

Depending on the company, think about it: What is particularly important to the others? that I’m funny? Or that I’m educated? Then try to emphasize this quality in yourself, for example by repeatedly making jokes or quoting philosophers. As a result, others are less aware of your supposed weaknesses – and they like you right away.

Where can I use the trick?

Basically everywhere. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in the office to please your boss, at home to make yourself more attractive to your partner or in new rounds where you don’t really know the people yet. It is important to always consider which characteristics could be particularly important to the respective person.

Do I have to bend over backwards to please others?

No, because in the end that doesn’t do anyone any good. Taking advantage of the halo effect is more like emphasizing your strengths. That’s not bending, just clever. Give it a try – you will be surprised at the effect you can achieve with it!
