Israel extends attacks on Gaza

In response to the continuous bombardment from Gaza, Israel has already demolished a skyscraper used by Palestinian militants. Now further Hamas infrastructure is under attack. Meanwhile, the US is sending its top Middle East diplomats to mediate.

Israel’s security cabinet has decided to expand military operations against the Islamist Hamas ruling in the Gaza Strip. The army should immediately target “symbols of Hamas rule” in the Palestinian territory, reported the channel 12 on Wednesday evening. According to local media reports, the Ministry of Finance in the heart of Gaza City and a Hamas bank have already been destroyed. This should make it more difficult for Hamas to control the Gaza Strip.

According to the Hamas-led Interior Ministry, all police buildings in the coastal area have been destroyed in the Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip. Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel and the EU. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects a ceasefire at this point in time. US President Joe Biden has now spoken to Netanyahu on the phone. Biden expressed hope that the violence could soon be stopped. At the same time he declared: “Israel has the right to defend itself.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had previously stressed the same thing and strongly condemned the rocket attacks by the “terrorist organization Hamas” from the Gaza Strip on Israeli civilians. “The Palestinians have a right to live in security. And the most important thing now is to contain the violence,” said Blinken. The Foreign Minister has now asked the top diplomat in charge, Hady Amr, to travel to the region immediately and meet with representatives from both sides. Amr will also push for de-escalation in Biden’s name. According to media reports, negotiators from Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations are also trying to calm things down. Blinken added that the US remains committed to a two-state solution. “This violence takes us further from that goal.”

Militant Palestinians have been firing rockets at Israel on a massive scale since Monday evening. So far, six people have been killed and more than 200 others injured. Israel’s army is responding to this with the largest bombing since the Gaza war in 2014. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, 65 Palestinians have been killed since Monday – including 16 children and five women. 365 people were injured.
