Hangar 13: 50 employees laid off as studio works on new Mafia and Top Spin

The studio Shed 13 definitely had a very complicated life. Following the failure of Mafia III, a wave of layoffs affected employees in 2016, and the story continues. The Novato, Calif.-based division, which represents one of Hangar 13’s three major hubs, is now set to lose more than half of its employees, with 50 dismissals to deplore today.

Departures while the studio is busy

It is Kotaku who lifts the veil on this affair, which comes shortly after the departure of Haden Blackman, replaced by Nick Baynes. The latter would then have addressed Novato employees remotely, as reported by Kotaku:

I know it sucks. I’m sorry I’m not here to deliver this message. I will come soon. I know you need leadership and structure and we are working on it. ยป

2K has confirmed the wave of layoffs, but says the studio is in a transition phase, saying it is doing everything possible to reassign some employees to other 2K projects and teams. This wave of layoffs also comes after the cancellation of the project Voltwhich reportedly cost the band more than $50 million.

Since then, we know that Hangar 13 is currently working on a prequel to the series. Mafia under the Unreal Engine 5but Kotaku also confirms thatanother team is working on the Project Hammerwhich would actually be a new top-spinthe famous tennis game license. This game should be released before the next one. Mafiaand the studio will only focus on these two licenses in the future.

We obviously wish good luck to all those affected by these layoffs.
