Hannelore Elsner: Celebrities inaugurate their place in Frankfurt

Actress Hannelore Elsner, who died in 2019, now has her own place in her adopted home: In Frankfurt, Hannelore-Elsner-Platz at Bockenheimer Warte was inaugurated on June 30 by Mayor Mike Josef (40), among others.

Elsner moved from Munich to Frankfurt with her husband and son in 1990. For 30 years, until her death, she lived not far from the Bockenheimer Warte in Frankfurt’s Westend. The square is located on the former site of the Goethe University, on which a new center for the arts will now be built.

Son Dominik: “My mother would have liked it very much”

Elsner’s son, Dominik Elstner, was also present at the inauguration. He said in his speech: “My mother would have liked that very much and it would have been an honor for her, I’m sure. I’ll probably sit at Hannelore-Elsner-Platz more often now.”

Mayor Josef pointed out that it was “truly a rare coincidence” to find a hitherto nameless place in such a “central, historic and appropriate place”. In the future, Hannelore-Elsner-Platz will not only commemorate an important actress and with her six decades of German film and television history, it will also set trend-setting impulses, according to the politician.

Head of the culture department and author Ina Hartwig (59) described Elsner as an “icon of German film” and said: “We are very proud that the name of Hannelore Elsner, who has chosen Frankfurt, will forever be associated with Frankfurt through the naming of the place.” Hartwig announced that Hannelore-Elsner-Platz would form the “heart” of the new culture campus.

Iris Berben: “She would have laughed too”

The actress’ colleagues also attended the event, including Florian David Fitz (48), director Oskar Roehler (64) and producer Nico Hoffmann (63). Actress Iris Berben (72) said loudly “Hesse show”that “Hannelore” would have been happy about the inauguration, “but she would have laughed too”. The event was moderated by Michel Friedman (67), who was also a personal friend of Elsner, as stated on the site of the KulturPortal Frankfurt.

The award-winning Bavarian actress Hannelore Elsner died on April 21, 2019 at the age of 76 as a result of cancer.
