NOTnew fine for the Canal group. On Wednesday May 31, the media policeman – Arcom – announced a new fine against the C8 channel following several attacks by Cyril Hanouna against the mayor of Paris, in October 2022. At the time, the host had summoned the Parisian city councilor to “shut up” and “hunt rats at night instead of talking bullshit”. After a record fine at the start of the year, this time Arcom opted for a penalty of 300,000 euros. In February, Arcom imposed a fine of 3.5 million euros against the same channel (and the same program).

This record fine was imposed after the insults hurled live by its star host at LFI deputy Louis Boyard in November. This new decision, which punishes “failures” on the part of C8, also takes into account the “previous sanctions imposed for previous violations of the same obligations”, underlined Arcom in a press release. The remarks in question were made in an issue of TPMP of October 5, 2022. “The mayor of Paris, who did not participate in the program, was the subject of personal attacks from the presenter, who invited her to “shut your mouth” and to “hunt rats at night instead of talking bullshit,” Arcom recalled.

“Bunch of morons”

Cyril Hanouna also said that Anne Hidalgo was part of a “‘band of morons’, exclaiming: ‘Don’t piss us off!’ and repeatedly reiterating the phrase ‘shut the fuck up’,” the regulator continued. Arcom “considered that these remarks were likely to infringe the rights of the mayor of Paris to respect for her honor and her reputation”. In addition, Arcom judged that “this sequence reflected a lack of knowledge” by the channel of its “obligation to control its antenna”.

C8 (channel of the Canal+ group, controlled by billionaire Vincent Bolloré) has been pinned on multiple occasions by Arcom in recent years because of Cyril Hanouna’s broadcasts. In March, the instance was seized about a controversial sequence of TPMP where a guest put forward a conspiracy theory about an alleged drug taken from children. At the beginning of April, a preliminary investigation was opened in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) after a report from the Paris police headquarters on the presence of people wrongly presented as Brav-M police officers in TPMP.

In recent months, the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak, has repeatedly recalled that Arcom could withdraw its frequency from C8 in 2025 if it does not meet its obligations. These statements sparked protests from the Canal+ group. Lawyer and pamphleteer Juan Branco released a book against the host on Thursday, simply titled Chanuna.
