Hans-Jochen Vogel: Former SPD leader died at the age of 94

Mourning for Hans-Jochen Vogel. The former chairman of the SPD and former federal minister died at the age of 94.

The former SPD leader Hans-Jochen Vogel is dead. He died at the age of 94 after a long illness in Munich, as initially reported by the German Press Agency, citing voices from the family. In the meantime, former companions also spoke up, including Udo Bullmann (64), Member of the European Parliament, and said goodbye to the politician.

"We mourn the loss of Hans-Jochen Vogel. With his great personality, he shaped German social democracy. His work and his attitude will leave traces. Our thoughts are with his family", Bullmann wrote on Twitter. The SPD parliamentary group joined the condolence on their official Twitter page. "We will miss him," it says there.

Vogel has achieved several noteworthy milestones in the course of his political career. From 1960 to 1972 he was Mayor of Munich, then among other things Federal Minister of Justice and briefly Governing Mayor of Berlin in 1981. In 1983 Vogel was put up as a candidate for chancellor in the federal election. From 1987 to 1991 he held the party chairmanship, until 1991 he was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag.
