In Germany, Happn is so far less well-known among dating platforms and follows its own unique concept of getting to know each other. The US company of the same name is behind the dating exchange. The app is available for both Android and iOS, and there is now also a web version.

Registration and setup

When creating a Happn account, the user comes into contact with the beautifully developed Happn app for the first time. The sky blue as an accent color goes well with the registration form, which offers the option to log in via phone number and email, Google or Facebook account. The app asks you to provide your age and a profile picture – the latter is verified with a video in which you are supposed to imitate a certain gesture. Great – that blocks most fake profiles.

After creating the account and verifying it, it’s time to get down to business: The app asks about your gender identity (unfortunately there is no non-binary option here!) and your preference, so that homosexual or bisexual encounters are also possible. Afterwards, a few standard questions are asked, for example about height, whether you want to have children and, in true dating platform style, quirky questions like “What would your perfect trip look like?” The city and permission to query the location are also requested.

As soon as you start trying to get to know a person on Happn, you will realize the special nature of this platform. Because you don’t immediately have several profiles to choose from to swipe and match, as is the case with Tinder and Co. You will only be shown profiles that you actually meet – in real life. This means that your smartphones have to be at a certain distance. The encounter will then be displayed on the homepage and in the timeline.

If you have met a Happn user who fits your preferences, you have the option to write them off, like them or reject them. Your encounter, if you match his preferences, also has these options. There is no search function; Viewing nearby profiles is not possible directly. Our test showed that finding a partner using this app is particularly effective in the city. There are comparatively few users in rural areas.

If you are eligible, you can play the game CrushTime via Happn. You will receive a notification about the platform and can guess which of them gave you a like in a 4-profile grid. However, only the first attempt is free, after which you have to send a SuperCrush to continue participating in the game.

Respectability and fake profiles

The comparatively small number of users on Happn is due, among other things, to the fact that the platform is largely fake-free due to its strict moderation and good verification when creating profiles. We didn’t come across any fakes in our test, so romance scams are likely to be rare.

This is far from the norm on dating platforms. The fact that fakes are dealt with so strictly shows that the platform is reputable and can be used without any concerns. This also increases your chances of finding a successful partner.
