Hard to stop – portal axles: Suzuki Jimny becomes an off-road acrobat

The funny and yet not so irresponsible Suzuki Jimny can be used off-road right from the factory. But a German-Swiss conversion with a very special chassis technology makes him completely an acrobat.

The companies Delta4x4 from Bavaria and Avus Auto from Switzerland have put together an off-road package for the Suzuki Jimny with portal axles as the most important component. Thanks to the chassis modification and a body height of 4.5 centimeters, the small Kraxler offers up to 40 centimeters of ground clearance below the differentials, which is almost twice as much as the production version, which towers 21 centimeters above the ground. While Avus was responsible for the chassis conversion, Delta is contributing, among other things, a wheel arch widening and special 18-inch rims with all-terrain tires, where the portal axle Jimny, which is homologated for Germany, costs at least 56,000 euros. If two switchable 100% locks, underride protection and roof rack are also ordered, the price rises to around 65,000 euros. For comparison: For the basic Jimny, Suzuki charges around 22,000 euros in Germany, in Austria it is a thousand more expensive. For a possible approval in Austria, however, the converted Jimny must be presented to the state government.
